Maxims Palace 美心皇宮 - Legit Dim Sum

Hong Kong has been a home of dim sum over the past decade. While there are abundant dim sum restaurants, Maxim is probably the biggest outlet in Hong Kong. I love Maxim’s Palace in particular because of its roomy dining hall and also the traditional fashion of how dim sum are delivered. From the old school food carts, you can have countless selection of dim sum at good quality and some signatures which are prepared fresh from the busy kitchen. Har gau, shao mai, baked barbecue pork bun, deep fried wonton, steamed rice rolls, egg tarts, the varieties are endless; given its reputation and budget friendly price tag.
We ordered a few classic dishes and new summer specials at this afternoon. The goose’s wings and webs are marinated in a tasteful chiuchow style soy sauce; the trio coloured capsicum stuffed with chubby shrimp paste; two kinds of steamed dumplings with chiuchow peanut and veggie fillings respectively.
Some hot steaming snacks are also rarely found in typical dim sum restaurants, such as the softly braised pomelo peel and absolutely addicting curry satay squid.
The chicken and abalone rice is served in a casserole, with excellent flavor and al dente texture.
Last but not the least, a dim sum meal is not complete without some Chinese confections.  From the seasonal menu, we tried a deep fried mantou with fluffy interior and milk curd filling. Traditional Ma Lai Gao is also soft enough with a few crushed walnut and brown sugar aftertaste. My favourite is this coffee pudding. Imagine having a latte in form of jelly, crossing between consecutive layers of evaporated milk and coffee.
Finally, we round up this dim sum feast with a warm hearty bowl of herbal tea with hard boiled egg.
