Fukuya 福家 - A House of Happiness

Fukuya, as translated in Chinese, is a house of happiness with a little beautiful backyard of green plants, long corridors and mini glasshouses. With true sophistication and high end services, it brings an utterly pleasurable experience of a traditional Japanese cuisine.
The omakase kaiseki is a seven course meal including Chef recommendation using seasonal ingredients. Each dish is speechlessly decent and lusciously high quality, not to mention the enticing platings of food.
Favourites are the unbelievably sweet uni on tofu, eel omelette, the eel cooked in claypot and the melt in your mouth wagyu beef. While the platter of sashimi fish are excellently fresh, the tempura mushroom and crab leg are also fried to perfection.
The set dinner is completed with a generous slice of irresistibly juicy and sweet Japanese melon and strawberries with whipped cream.
I honestly recommend this place to everyone who is visiting Kuala Lumpur!

Humble Beginnings - The Thousand Layers

Mille crepe has been an internationally popular patisserie for long. Also known as crepe cake, it is basically a stack of thin crepes layered with cream filling that can either be flavored or not. At Kuala Lumpur, a locally branded version Humble Beginnings has achieved good comments.
Surely the French vanilla cannot go wrong in any sense. This original classic is the best with adequate cream filling in alternate between house made crepes.
Unfortunately, the royal milk tea is discrediting to the expected milk tea flavor that is overpowered by its own sweetness. Nonetheless, it still worths a try and remember to come by during the weekends for their special Pandan Kaya flavor!

Dolly Dim Sum - Signature Dolly

Dolly is a all day dim sum teahouse at Avenue K that is right opposite to twin towers. They specialize in traditional dim sum cooking, but interpreted in its own modern way with exclusiveness and delicacy. With bamboo baskets hanging around, colourful drawings on walls and a glassware looking environment, it provides an artistic ambience to enjoy such exquisitely made dim sum.
To start, the most ordinary looking yam puff is filled with mashed taro and sliced veggies. A deep fried dumpling is made abnormally with wasabi dressed shrimps, which is surprisingly well done!
Favourite is definitely their signature salted fish bun. Seared with golden brown bottom, stuffed with fish paste with an added note of cilantro leaves.
A resemblance of barbecue pork puff is instead made with chicken and sweetly glazed thin pastry.
Whilst the plate of Thai style fried rice tastes sweet and a little sour, it is however a bit sticky as well.
We end with a refreshing cup of pomegranate infused mocktail, the bright red jasmine tea.
For a budget friendly brunch, Dolly will be a good one.

Old China Cafe - When Chinese Meets Malay

Old China Cafe is located in the heart of Chinatown, where mainly occupied by Myanmarian. Since 1920, this cafe restaurant serves a combination of Chinese and Malay food, which are now commonly referred as Southeast Asian cuisine. Featuring a setting of antiques lamps, old mirrors and vintage furnitures, it reflects the old days of China and also delivers unique delicacies.
The hot salad with radish and cuttlefish is deliciously served with fresh lettuce leaves and spicy sambal chili paste.
The pineapple curry with jumbo shrimps are also made to great hotness, which is perfect to go with the naturally blue dyed coconut rice.
The ordinary looking fried omelette has retained slightly undercook, filled with a mixed crunch of shredded veggies which however does not significantly show a taste of pickled shrimp.
Finally, a love or hate ending of durian flesh has been made better with a spoonful of coconut cream.
Simple ingredients, basic home cooking, are the shoutouts here.

Nanas Green Tea - Not Only Maccha!

If you are craving for some matcha green tea at Kuala Lumpur, surely nana’s green tea is the way to go.
This new Japanese cafe is settled at the same level as Magnum Cafe, inside of Mid Valley Megamall. They deliver not just simple brewed matcha tea, but also matcha ice cream, parfaits, floats and jelly. Not to mention my favourite soft serve ice cream in cone, tatedora is also the scrumptious snack on with different fillings.
The matcha green tea soft serve is simply gorgeous. There is not much to complain about as I was even allowed to have a try before ordering. Forget about iciness, the smooth, creamy texture and deliciousness of Uji tea are unbeatable.
Tatedora, is basically a folded version of dorayaki. Filled with lemon cream, black sesame or a typical red bean paste, they are recommended to go with different condiments. For instance, red bean is suggested to be paired with an evilly thick sliced butter, and black sesame with mochi. To add on, the fluffy pancake is always grilled and served hot.

Magnum Cafe - Make My Own Magnum

Magnum was once a quite popular ice lolly brand in Asia. As they expand from retailing to investing in cafes, they once again become a favourite of all. This Magnum cafe is designed in luxurious theme of chocolate and gold, holding two mezzanine levels at the Mid Valley Mall.
The elegant bar of toppings allows you to custom your own magnum, whilst an alternative dine in option is also available at the upper floor.
At the counter, choices of chocolate or vanilla ice cream, then to toppings from nuts to popcorns and finally a dip plus drizzle of dark, milk and white chocolate. My own magnum is lusciously made to impress many of us and the combination of rose petals, goji berries and meringue liked marshmallow are what make it extraordinarily special.
An appealing jar of trifle has layers of meringue, mascarpone cheese, cream, chocolate; served atop a vanilla magnum. The addition of cashew meringue pairs amazingly with the light mascarpone cream, which tastes so much like cheesecake in a jar.
No doubt that Magnum has brought their ice cream pops to a whole new level.
