Bistro du Vin - Little French Bistro

Bistro du Vin is a hidden gem at Kennedy Town that offers a real taste of authentic French cuisine. The decor has vintage drawings and prints, intimate atmosphere offered for a lovely meal. Each table has a mini chalkboard showcasing specials of the day. Whilst during lunch time, appealing daily set menu is available, which happens to include some of their signatures as well!
Egg lovers should not miss this stunning appetizer; a satisfying traditional salted cod emulated with olive oil and mashed potato, a dash of paprika for a sweet note to the hollandaise sauce.
The excellently baked French onion soup has cheesy baguette over a generous serving of caramelized sweet onion, but be cautious about the piping hot bowl.
Moving on to the main, the small yet juicy pigeon is slow-cooked to great tenderness and aesthetically plated over mini rice-like pasta, made tastefully with creamy black pepper sauce.
A classic souffle is also perfect to finish off a French meal. The delicious and superbly fluffy pudding made with orange brandy just easily melts in your mouth, served with a simple scoop of vanilla ice cream and slivered almonds, which give a cold and crunchy kick respectively.
I absolutely love this mini bistro and trust me, this is where you should pilgrimage.

Urban Bakery - Bloody Berry and The Hulk

Urban Bakery, inspired by London's street market, delivers artistic and mouth-watering bakery products in European style, well known by their fun and innovative croissant sandwich creations. Nonetheless, I ain’t so crazy about those buttery croissants but their enormous looking cakes at the display fridge.
Green Tea the Hulk is composed of two layer of green tea sponge, green tea mousse and on top some sweetened whipped cream and green tea crumbs. Truly speaking, it doesn't show a hype, the contrary between bitterness and sweetness is just passable.
In comparison, the white chocolate strawberry sponge cake is playfully decorated with a “blood” syringe, or to be precise, some sweetened strawberry syrup, which gives its name “Bloody”.
Both of them does not excite me and are too heavy to be consumed!
If Urban Bakery says, “Man does not live on bread alone” (Urban Bakery, 2014), then it is definitely not cakes neither!

Pololi - Mahalo!

Woohoo! Aloha Pololi! It is the very first Hawaiian Poke shop in Hong Kong. Hiding along Graham street, with a colorful decor and super friendly service, it is so exciting to try out their homemade ahi poke with traditional Hawaiian flavors that are tailored to suit Asian palettes. Since this is my first visit to Pololi, they offered to let me try out some of their recommendations: traditional, ginger shoyu, avocado tuna and wasabi mayo. Each poke bowl comes with a base of your choice, either white rice, brown rice, salad or a mix of two; then the protein.
The traditional shoyu ahi is so fresh, slightly chewy, yet not tough, and spiced up with sliced red onion. But I would definitely go for my most loved second choice, which is also their newest creation, salmon poke with pinenut and shoyu. The deep orange salmon is fatty, moist and have a subtle sweet flavor.
This place is indeed distinctive, especially due to their manifold choices of poke! I can't wait for my next return to try their musubi too!

Foxtail & Broomcorn - Fox says Noodle!

Looking for a great lunch deal in Hong Kong? Here it is! Using fresh and locally sourced ingredients, Foxtail & Broomcorn is a MSG free noodle joint that brings Asian traditional flavors into innovation with European fusion. Their Tiffany-blue themed modern setting creates a relaxing and friendly environment, which includes a noodle bar and very few tables.
Among the eight signature noodles, Amoy is a gluten free and low carb option, rice noodles served in a truly purified and fresh fish broth, silky fish fillets and two most loved chewy parmesan chips. The additional salmon fillet is medium cooked to perfection, embodied by a fragrant and sweet vanilla flavor.
The fried tofu patties are a healthier option to curry fish cakes. They are unexpectedly juicy, whilst flavor is also enhanced by the clean mushroom broth.
We ended with two desserts of them, the Pandan crepe with slightly sweet and salty coconut flakes; a dense cake with crushed nuts and salted coconut caramel. They are my favorites!

Man Mo Cafe - Bon Appetit Dim Sum

Man Mo Cafe is found among antique shops on Cat Street, which is naming after the nearby Man Mo Temple. It has a dynamic contrast of European and Chinese setting, simple wooden furniture and a trace of traditional Chinese element, serving Cantonese fusion dim sum from a Michelin Chef. At first, I could not conceived of dim sum with a twist of Italian or French cooking but until the first dish arrives at the table.
The wrapper of dumpling is rather thick, the flavor of brie filling is so strong, cheesy and creamy while the truffle has unfortunately contributed so little in flavor. The better dish here, Burgerbun, replicates traditional baked barbecue pork bun, stuffed with beef burger, honey glazed, along with a mini bottle of ketchup mayonnaise. It is a bit soggy at the bottom but still fluffy in terms of texture.
The seafood rice noodle rolls, are drenched in a thick bouillabaisse based sauce with squid and shrimps. But I would still prefer my rice roll with traditional soy, sweet and sesame paste. For sweet, I love the brulee meringue serves atop HK egg lemon tart, the tanginess is yet too weak and the crust is way too crumbly.
Given their food are served small portions, I can surely find a lot better dim sum for this price range!

U Can Cook vs KKK - I call them Peace Bun!

During this time of spring, the energy and soul of Hong Kong people are reignited with rousing performances and bamboo bun tower in celebration of the Cheung Chau Da Jiu (aka Bun) Festival. That include lively parades, Kung Fu demo, lion dances as well as the most important and unique bun grabbing contest.
Bakeries will sell buns with a "Peace" stamped that manifests sign of safety and peacefulness, with choices of white sesame, red bean or lotus fillings. Traditionally, white sesame is the only choice; steamed, filled whilst not so fluffy, it is nevertheless my favourite of all kinds. Noticed that along the praya road, a nearby cafe is also offering peace bun macarons. It is just a passable one with a teeny tiny scent of tea.

Fish and Meat - Farm to Table Brunch

It is truly anticipating to enjoy a Sunday brunch under this stylish and modern atmosphere at Fish & Meat, brought to you by the Maximal Concepts. With a focus on best ingredients and rustic cooking, they introduce their food from farm to table.
At the buffet, there are selections of sustainable seafood, fresh and healthy ready-made salad, entrees of toasted bruschetta with creamy mozzarella, roasted veggies, basil pesto or spinach and artichokes dips in addition to prosciutto with cantaloupe slices; not to mention a buttermilk pancake station, thick and fluffy buttermilk pancakes are made upon order to serve with enticing toppings that include fresh berries, mangoes, pineapples, vanilla cream, caramel, maple syrup or even crispy bacons. They also serve homemade granola parfait in individual mason jars! Ideally, they offer some of the best main course options, favourites are grilled brioche with organic poached egg, buttery mushroom ragout and truffle parmesan; the pan fried Barramundi fillet with crispy skin and Mediterranean spicy salsa is also impressive.
Don’t forget to save room for the homemade desserts, the slightly chewy pavlova with passionfruit coulis, the zesty brulee lemon tart with Tahitian vanilla cream and the extremely light whipped mascarpone cheesecake with a creamy scoop of raspberry gelato are to die for! Absolutely the perfect completion of this family Sunday Brunch!
